1. Good to know about Paleokastritsa

⚠️ Before you go:

  • Water temperature: Cooler than the rest of the island — deep-water currents and sheltered coves. In July–August it reaches ~23–25°C, but it can be surprisingly cold in May or October.
  • Landscape: Mountainous area with narrow coves — visually spectacular, but not a wide sandy beach with a gently sloping entry. Ideal for snorkelling and scuba; less suitable for families with young children who want shallow water.
  • Prices: Slightly higher than the island average — the area’s popularity is reflected in accommodation and taverna prices.
  • Season: June–September has the warmest water. May and October are good for visits without the crowds.

Paleokastritsa is the centre of water activities on the west coast of Corfu.

  • Boat hire (no licence needed): ~€50–60/day + fuel. Explore secluded beaches inaccessible from land — Paradise Beach, Chomi. One of the best activities in Paleokastritsa.
  • Taxi boat: Drops you off and picks you up from the secluded beaches, ~€10–15/person. Simpler than hiring your own boat if you don’t want to navigate.
  • Yellow Submarine: Glass-bottomed boat — enjoy marine life without diving equipment. Great for children or non-swimmers.
  • Scuba Diving: Achilleon Diving centre offers courses and dives in the underwater caves of the area. Good visibility in the coves, with diverse marine flora and fauna.

5. Sights and attractions

Paleokastritsa Monastery

Perched on the hilltop above the coves, with a complete panoramic view over all 6 bays and the western mountains. The building dates from the 13th century (later reconstructed), with a small Byzantine museum containing icons and artefacts, and bougainvillea-filled gardens. Free entry — modest dress required (shoulders and knees covered). Open mornings and afternoons, with a midday break.

Angelokastro Castle

Byzantine fortress on a clifftop at 305 m altitude, near the village of Krini (a few km north of Paleokastritsa). It served as a refuge for the island’s population during Ottoman invasions. The walk up takes ~15 minutes. Extensive views over the west coast and Paleokastritsa’s coves. Low-cost entry ticket.

Lakones — Bella Vista

A traditional hillside village above Paleokastritsa. The Bella Vista viewpoint offers one of the widest panoramic views on the western side of the island — the entire coastline with the coves visible from above. A few cafés and tavernas in the village. About 10 minutes by car from Paleokastritsa.

A typical day in Paleokastritsa

☀️ Morning: Pick a quiet cove — Alipa or Platakia are less crowded early on. Snorkelling in the clear water before the boat trips arrive.

Midday: Hire a small boat (no licence needed) and explore the secluded beaches — Paradise Beach and Chomi are only accessible from the sea. Pack lunch and eat on the water.

🏛️ Afternoon: Visit the monastery on the hilltop — free entry, 15-minute drive. Or take a short detour to the Bella Vista viewpoint in Lakones (~10 min) for the panoramic shot.
